🇨🇱 Chile’s irreplaceable Guafo Island is now protected from coal mining, timber logging and other destructive industries. 🪵 Thanks to a recent purchase from a private owner, @rewild and partners have ensured this Key Biodiversity Area is forever preserved. ⛰ 🟢 Now the partners aim to donate the property to the Chilean government to convert it into a Chilean National Park, ensuring this vital place is conserved for future generations. Guafo Island is critical to global biodiversity and the overall health of our planet. 🐦 This island is home to significant breeding populations of seabirds, including the world’s largest breeding colony of Sooty Shearwaters, which migrate over 40,000 miles from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere every single year. It also boasts Magellanic Penguins and a breeding population of Endangered Marine Otters. Learn more about Guafo Island ➡️ link in bio! Protecting Guafo Island was made possible thanks to support from Re:wild, the Jeff and Marieke Rothschild Foundation, the Wyss Foundation, Art into Acres, Cultiva and WWF Chile. Re:wild was represented, on a pro-bono basis, in the purchase by a team of Akin attorneys. The Carey law firm served as Re:wild’s Chilean local counsel for the transaction. 📸: 1-Shutterstock 2-Evelyn Pfeiffer, WWF Chile
