ELLE Magazine
Netflix’s new true crime documentary, 'A Deadly American Marriage,' follows the case of Molly Martens and her father, Thomas, who were convicted of murdering Molly’s husband Jason Corbett in 2017. As the case worked its way through the courts, another trial of sorts played out in their close-knit community, where Molly was seen as either a victim of domestic violence or a murderer who robbed two children of their father. Molly and Thomas were originally sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison, but they appealed their convictions, were granted a retrial, and ultimately took a plea deal on charges of involuntary manslaughter and were released from prison in 2024. In ELLE's May 2021 issue, @reallyalexronan took a deep dive into the case. Head to the link in bio to read the full story behind the Netflix doc. Photos: Courtesy of Netflix

@domestic.violence.awareness_ this was a classic domestic violent relationship…the prosecution of course wishes for ambiguity in order to cause doubt… the children I believe have been brainwashed and I’m not surprised. No one can blame them for they rely on their aunt for stability and it is understandable that they would want to please their aunt’s narrative. Ireland is a very political place and people don’t get work there if their family is of another religion. Many people have left Ireland for they are unemployed being of a different Christian faith. So there are many politics involved and it’s apparent that this man is an abuser to his first wife and no one looked any further into the first wife’s death. No one has their grandchildren write an emergency phone number under a doll or have secret passwords in case things gets rocky. It’s evident by his direct recordings that he was verbally belligerent. Those recordings he wasn’t acting he was super awful to Molly and I can’t comprehend how those recordings are dismissed. It’s so obvious the children knew the truth and spoke it prior to being forced to Ireland with the dad’s family. I just can’t comprehend how no one else can see that this man has a history of abuse and even admitted it to his doctor that he gets angry. I just don’t understand how no one else can see it for what it is. Molly is lucky to be here today and it is evident he used the children to keep her enduring the abuse- just terrible @netflix
