Supreme®/Marithé + François Girbaud. 04/03/2025 Marithé + François Girbaud is a French fashion house founded by designers François Girbaud and Marithé Bachellerie in 1972. The label is renowned for its experimental approach to denim – from pioneering treatments like stonewashing and laser engraving, to developing distinctive constructions and fits. Marithé and François began working together in 1964 at Western House, a Paris clothing shop that imported utilitarian dark blue denim. Marithé and François began experimenting with Western House’s denim stock – washing jeans and jackets at local laundromats to soften, shrink and fade them. Without knowing it, the pair were the first to pre-wash denim prior to sale – effectively introducing artificially aged denim to consumers. By 1968, Marithé and François opened their own design studio – importing denim, moleskin and corduroy fabrics, as well as aging leathers, to develop their own worn-in styles. Over the following decade, Marithé and François introduced knitwear, sportswear, children’s clothing, and a specialized leather line, all while continuing to experiment with denim treatments and shapes. By the early 1980s, the pair were beginning to break into the American market. Shortly after debuting their first baggy style in 1978, Marithé and François introduced their X-pocket construction in 1981. By shifting pockets lower on the body, they developed a refined silhouette that broke radically from traditional American 5-Pocket jeans. In the late 1990s, the brand introduced its defining Shuttle Jean. Inspired in part by space suit design, the Shuttle combined an oversized, articulated fit with cinchable velcro straps. This distinctive style developed a cult following, and best exemplifies the brand’s innovation. Supreme has worked with Marithé + François Girbaud on a new collection for Spring 2025. The collection consists of a Leather Flight Bomber Jacket, Denim Trucker Jacket, Down Puffer Vest, Hockey Jersey, Hooded Sweatshirt, Leather Cargo Pant, Baggy Jean, Sweatpant, Denim Short, Tee, Camp Cap, Beanie, Tote Bag and Towel.
