⚪Designed by @skidmoreowingsmerrill, the Kuwait University Administration Facilities anchor the northern edge of the new campus, serving as the institutional core for one of the region’s largest academic hubs. Completed in 2022, the complex includes six interconnected buildings, a library, cultural center, visitor center, conference hall, administration offices, and a convocation hall. Each structure addresses specific programmatic needs while collectively forming a cohesive architectural identity rooted in Kuwait’s vernacular and tailored to the desert climate.
A contemporary expression of tradition, the buildings’ façades reinterpret the mashrabiya, an iconic element of Middle Eastern design, through parametrically patterned screens that filter light, encourage airflow, and reduce solar gain. Collaborating with Kuwaiti artist Farah Behbehani, the design team integrated calligraphic motifs inspired by Arabic and Kufic scripts into the screens, merging cultural symbolism with environmental performance. As the sun moves across the sky, the patterned screens create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow across interior and exterior surfaces, emphasizing both climatic performance and cultural continuity.
