Despite last week’s court ruling, Alaska’s bears and wolves are still at risk. 🐺 Wolves can still be legally slaughtered from helicopters (they were not part of the Mulchatna ruling) 🐻 Bears and wolves near Denali (Proposal 75) can still be legally slaughtered from helicopters, starting this May Last week, a judge suspended the Alaska Department of Fish & Game’s (ADF&G) plan to kill wolves and bears this spring under the guise of “predator control” to help the declining Mulchatna caribou herd. But instead of reevaluating their approach, ADF&G is doubling down and trying to find a work around. They argue that killing predators is necessary to protect the caribou herd for subsistence hunters, despite years of scientific evidence showing habitat loss, disease, and climate change—not predators—are the real threats to caribou populations. ADF&G is pushing politics over science, and Alaska’s wildlife is paying the price. Predator control at this scale isn’t conservation—it’s destruction.
