I used to do search and rescue training with him in Colorado. I would go hike a mile away and let him off leash, and he’d go find me. He definitely adds another layer of planning and responsibility. If I want to go on vacation or go somewhere for the weekend, I have to take an extra step to make sure he’s alright. Cooper, mix (11 y/o), N 6th & Berry St., Brooklyn, NY • “He’s named after Agent Dale Cooper, the Twin Peaks character. He’s a rescue from Austin – we got him when he was eight weeks old. He’s too smart for his own good. If there’s some kind of food item in the middle of the table, he’ll wait a week for us both to leave the house to get up there and find it. He’s very vocal and not very patient. I grew up as a person who was scared of dogs and didn’t have dogs. I came around to a puppy, and the first time he fell asleep in my lap, I just kind of melted. And then I became obsessed with my dog, and then I became obsessed with every single dog I ever see, and I have a folder of random people’s dogs I’ve never met.”

Dan, Dachshund (2 y/o), N 6th & Berry St., Brooklyn, NY • “He’s not named after any Dan, he’s just a Dachshund named Dan. He’s so chill – he doesn’t bark or anything. Except he hates Goldendoodles, which is a bummer because there’s so many in the city. I think he knows that they’re cute, and he’s a different kind of cute. From day one, I took him to the bar, and he just sits on my lap. He’s my best friend. I’m from the west coast, so he’ll come to my parent’s house and he’ll summer on the Oregon coast. He’s a very lucky dog.”

Rainey & Charlie, Pit Bull mix & Husky mix, N 6th & Berry St., Brooklyn, NY • “Rainey is from @heartsandbonesrescue, and my girlfriend adopted Charlie in Arizona four years ago. Charlie is the chillest dog – she’ll just lay down for hours. Rainey has so much drive. My girlfriend’s mom actually adopted Charlie’s whole litter. I was fostering for a while, and when I met Rainey, I was like, I gotta keep her. I’m biased, but she’s super reactive, and she’s made huge progress. Miss Moneypenny, Akita/Poodle mix (5 y/o), N 5th & Berry St., Brooklyn, NY • “I’ve always fostered puppies, so I fostered her and her sister, and then I kept her. She came programmed well-mannered. My friends call her Jessica Chastain because she’s so proper and perfect. We live right by Fellow Barber, and she’s like a tourist trap. People on Saturdays and Sundays take pictures of her in the window. We’ll walk around, and sometimes they’re like, oh, that’s the window dog! I initially called her the best antidepressant ever.”
