“The Wanaka Tree is no doubt an iconic spot — one of those places most photographers dream of shooting, even knowing it’s been captured a thousand times before. I’d already been there three times that week, each time hoping for something magic, but wasn’t super stoked on anything I had captured. On the fourth morning, everything changed. The sky lit up in a way I’ve never seen — soft pinks blending into deep blues, the kind of color that transforms an entire landscape. Inspired by the nocturnal underbelly of China – a country he has returned to repeatedly throughout his career – Zachmann set out to capture the transience of the night as it unfolded in dimly lit streets, city corners and nightclubs.⁠ ⁠ "In the role of an observer, he positions himself on the edge of the world that he is studying. Solitarily scrutinizing the city in obscurity, he hesitates between entering into this nocturnal universe or staying outside it.
