The colossal squid—one of nature’s most elusive animals, and handily the world’s most massive squid species—was first identified 100 years ago using remains found in the stomach of a sperm whale. Now, one has been filmed alive in its natural oceanic environment for the first time. The nearly one-foot-long juvenile offers scientists a rare glimpse into its unique behaviors and biology. I hope you guys understand how huge this is! The giant squid was first photographed in 2004 and filmed in 2013. The colossal squid has never been seen alive, only dead specimens.

To set things straight: - The baby is a foot long, "colossal" isn't an adjective here, it's simply the name of the species. Babies grow up. - Colossal squid aren't as long as giant squid, but they're heavier. - Adults live up to 4,000m down. We're not getting a video of one any time soon - This video is a MAJOR deal - This is the first video of one *in its natural habitat*, not the first video of one

Oh my god this is huge for so many reasons. Not only is this footage of a live colossal squid in its natural habitat, it’s a BABY. The life cycles of deep sea creatures aren’t always easy to follow, so this is absolutely remarkable. I love cephalopods so much oh my god

BEAUTIFUL DESTINATIONS

Wow. It’s finally happening :) Over ten years ago, when we started our Instagram account, there was no such thing as a “creator”, social media was early and the travel industry for many years after did not take me or BD seriously. Now, thanks to all of you, that’s very different. Tens of millions of people globally follow our channels (I still find this so crazy!) hundreds of creators build exciting careers with us- doing what they love & expressing themselves whilst traveling, and the travel industry is partnering with us in a massive way. Beautiful Destinations has become a fantastic business, profitable and growing fast, leading content innovation and marketing in our industry. We’re very proud of that. But we’re just getting started :) With our partners @visit.dubai we are building something truly special, the world’s first creator training program in partnership with an official Tourism board, ‘The Beautiful Destinations Academy, Powered by Dubai’ and we’d love you to be involved. Do you have the skills or interest to be a mentor at the BD Academy? (we move you to Dubai and pay you!) Do you have friends who could apply to be part of the program? Do you have ideas for how we could get the word out more? Or ideas about anything else? I’m all ears! We want to raise the game again in travel so please get in touch if you’d like to join us. Thanks J #BDAcademy #VisitDubai #MyDubai
