When @chrisbenchetler started working on ‘Mountains of the Moon’ project I was blown away by the mega effort of creating these otherworldly night scenes in Nature. When the invite came to join the team in Oregon I pushed every commitment to make it happen. A week of shooting between the hours of 8pm - 3am in the muddy, rainy PNW was exactly what I had hoped it would be.. inspiring. Blown away by the production team that put in so much work to make this happen. In the beginning there was a lot of ambition but no plan. I was 19 and I quit my job to pursue surf photography but had no clue where to start… so I would stand atop the Pismo pier shooting expired film of random people out in the lineup then chase em down the beach when they got out to see if they wanted to buy a photo… a seemingly desperate way to enter the business, but I was filled with passion and a desire to grow. Since then - my camera setup has majorly improved but I still like to carry around a 35mm point & shoot that reminds of those days & sometimes results in my favorite images from trips. @negativelab has been handling all of our scans lately and I’ve been appreciating the craft that goes into that. A wave of yellow & purple wildflowers washing across the New Cuyama serves as the marker of spring’s arrival- but also a reminder of heavy rainfall making its way to intersect with the dormant seeds eventually bursting with life. On assignment for @natgeo in 2023 - our brief was to document this eruption of wildflowers (better known as a superbloom) in central California following a series of storms and flooding that brought the state out of a drought. An aerial perspective seemed like the right approach for the colors and contours marking the hills… providing beauty and personality I’ve come to appreciate about my homeland.

This year’s pilgrimage to Hokkaido was a unique one filled with uncommonly sunny skies, a broken Fibula, and tons of good people stopping by @iwanairesort for some cat-skiing and life changing sushi. This place is a sort of home away from home and the images shown are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the beauty in this little corner of Hokkaido. I gotta say though that it’s the people & relationships here who make it truly special. Every year when ski season rolls around there’s no place I’d rather be.
