You never forget your first lion. But watching your 7-year-old see theirs? That’s a whole different kind of magic. Today I watched my son spot his very first wild lion — not in a book, not behind glass, but right here, in the wild. A huge male, walking straight toward us, calm, powerful, and utterly majestic. His face shifted from excitement to awe, and for a moment, the world stood still. After years of guiding and photographing wildlife, I thought I understood wonder. But seeing it reflected in his eyes? It felt like I was experiencing it all over again — for the very first time. This is why we wander. This is why we return. To remember that the world is still wild. To feel small, humble, and part of something bigger.
