Hitchhiking isn’t just for humans. In the natural world, all sorts of animals rely on larger creatures for transport—whether it's a grasshopper climbing aboard a sheep or a barnacle clinging to a sea turtle. The scientific term for this behavior is "phoresy," and it serves as a lifeline for many species, helping them find mates or complete part of their life cycle. In this photo, three remoras (Remora brachyptera) ride a Chilean devil ray (Mobula tarapacana) off the coast of Santa Maria Island, Azores. Learn more about phoresy at the link in bio.
