There are more than 2,600 firefly species across all continents, except for Antarctica, yet scientists have assessed the conservation status of only 150 of them. Of those, 20 percent are already threatened with extinction, which scientists suspect is largely driven by habitat loss, pollution, pesticide use, and climate change. This knowledge gap is a huge problem for conservation. To better protect fireflies, scientists need a better understanding of their behavior and ecology. To fill this gap, experts are working to monitor fireflies globally, build a comprehensive species list, and better assess their conservation status. These composite images remind us what we stand to lose—and how much darker our world would be without them. I’m so encouraged to find so many amazing firefly spots still thriving in Appalachia. I love seeing all the variety far from home.
