Most people who trek the Sumatran rainforest never see one. 🦧 The flanged male orangutan—with his massive cheek pads, long hair, and deep booming calls—rules the forest, but sightings are incredibly rare. These solitary giants can weigh over 200 pounds and spend most of their time high in the canopy, away from trails and humans. But today, on our very first full day, we saw one. A huge, wild, dominant male. In total, we encountered five orangutans, plus macaques, monkeys, a peacock, and a chorus of jungle life all around us. Walking through this ancient rainforest, side by side with the world’s only red ape, is something we’ll never forget.
