Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our #NatGeoYourShotOceans challenge and to our guest curator @jahawibertolli! “The level of entries was really very impressive for this month’s challenge, making it super hard to pick my favorites, everyone who entered and was in the final selection really put so much into their images and videos, and it really shows, so a very big well done to everyone! With my final selection, I was looking for images that made you think and highlighted marine life, sometimes things we see often underwater, and sometimes things that are very rare, in a fresh, unique, and well-executed way. Composition, color, technicality, and story were leading factors in my thoughts when I was making my final selection, but it’s also an emotional connection to the images, which is what I love about photography. Thank you, Your Shot community, for taking on this challenge and showcasing your amazing skills in underwater photography and keep showcasing the beauty, diversity, and fragility of our oceans as they need more ambassadors advocating for their protection, as they are vital to us all and to life on earth!” - Jahawi Bertolli Photos 1-2 by Carmen Carnero @carmen.carnero; photo 3 by Marcia Riederer @marciariederer; photos 4-5 by Sage Ono @sageonophotography; video 6 by Logan Wood @jlowood.

Photo by @nicholesobecki | Sand is born as tiny pieces of rock and shell break away, their hard edges softened by time. Life in the desert polishes each fragment to smooth, round grains, fueled by the wind to reach their final forms. Arriving at Rub’ Al Khali, or the “Empty Quarter,” the harsh, vast beauty moved me to silence. Known for its distinct desert environment, devoid of nearly all life, this place has never supported a permanent human presence—nomadic tribes like the Bedouin could only pass through. Following the descending ridges with my eyes, I tried to picture the caravan lines, human and camel forms advancing steadily on, nearly swallowed by the enormity of the cascading dunes. | From the known to the unknown, discover Abu Dhabi at your own pace: @VisitAbuDhabi

Sealed inside a ceramic funerary pot for over 4,500 years, an ancient Egyptian man’s skeleton has revealed a surprising secret: his exceptionally well-preserved DNA. It's the first time scientists have been able to sequence the oldest complete genome from Egypt's Old Kingdom period—offering the chance to reconstruct his face and reveal new insights into the era. Multiple exposures of these moths, known as snouts, were taken near photographer Rogier Maaskant’s home in the Netherlands as part of a larger project highlighting the ecological importance of often overlooked insects. “The world of nocturnal insects is both modest and spectacular, as earthly as it is magical and as mundane as it is special,” Maaskant said.
