Techniques to achieve striking symmetry and proportion in your images! With @krimamr / Symmetry and proportion are essential elements in art, as they can help create a sense of balance and order, improving the overall impact of an image, design, or photograph:
1) Symmetry refers to the balanced distribution of elements within a scene, horizontal and vertical, where elements are mirror images of each other on either axis. In travel images, symmetry can appear in reflections, such as in a calm lake or a mirrored cabin. To create symmetry using a reflection, consider the placement of your main subject in the frame. For instance, when you compose a boat, place it in the center of your photo - see pics 6 and 8.
Through patterns, you can also achieve a sense of symmetry. One of the best ways to implement symmetry in your images is by using architecture. Bridges and buildings, in particular, feature interesting elements and repetitive patterns that you can use to create a sense of symmetry - see pics 3 and 7.
2) Proportion refers to the relationship between the different elements within a scene and their relative sizes. In travel photography, this can include the proportion of the sky to the land, the size of objects within the frame, and the balance of negative space.
To create proportion in your images, consider the placement of the horizon line. Placing the horizon in the upper third or lower third of the frame can add a sense of balance. Similarly, you can use the size of the elements in your frame to create proportion. For example, if you want to emphasize a specific subject, try to position it so it takes up a significant portion of the frame - see pic. 10.
You can also use leading lines to create a sense of proportion and balance in your images. Leading lines are figures within the scene that guide the viewer’s eye toward the main subject, like a dune or a river, for instance, and picture eleven of this series is an example of how to implement this technique.
