Nature Is Metal
Sea Lampreys are ancient fish that have survived for millions of years, using their round, toothy, sucker-like mouths to latch onto fish and feed on their blood and fluids. They’re born and spawn in freshwater rivers and streams, and while they can live in the lakes connected to these rivers, they mostly use them as a brief stopover in their native North Atlantic range before heading to the ocean to feed. As parasites, sea lampreys play a role in aquatic ecosystems by feeding on host fish, which helps cycle nutrients and keeps fish populations from growing too large in their natural habitats, while also providing food for predators like birds and larger fish in the food chain - a properly lampreyed fish is considerably weaker and easier for the hungry to capture. So even these eerie wriggling nightmare creatures reveal the importance of parasites in maintaining balance in the ecosystem. 📽 by @roysboyscharters - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nature Is Metal is powered by you! The name “Sea Lamprey” implies the existence of Ground Lamprey, which is much more terrifying.

The Pacific lamprey found in the west are native, while the Atlantic lamprey found in the Great Lakes are invasive. Their little teeth leave a smiley face shaped marks. Metal indeed

Get rid of them, they’re invasive and don’t belong here! I wonder if there’s anything that eats them

Depends where these were found tho. Hugely invasive in our Great Lakes!

There was a particularly cruel chap in Ancient Rome who would throw his slaves to the lampreys, deliberately starving them beforehand 😬

No, fck em hahaha I get it but no. I’m currently getting bit by three types of flies and mosquitos in 🇧🇷. Kill all parasites. Their role has expired. Especially the tongue replacing one on fish. It’s time non-parasites unite and stop this pro parasite propaganda. They are not needed and only cause harm. #NoParasiteNoProblem
