A sketch part of the hike home🤯. Sometimes it takes solving a glacier spine maze to make it back after glacier outings… don’t try this at home and yes the correct boots 🥾 and crampons where not with me on this short glacier outing yet made do with micro spikes. I strongly recommend not doing this as it’s not as safe yet in a pinch 🤏🏼 you can absolutely get by on mellow glacier terrain with aggressive micro spikes but that’s ultimately up to one’s own risk tolerance

Nature Is Metal

Enough To Go Around 📽 by @russ_wildlife Vultures overtake a buffalo carcass after the previous owners have moved on Driven by their evolutionary adaptations as scavengers, vultures feed on carrion to fulfill their ecological role as nature’s cleanup crew, efficiently assisting the ecosystem in reclaiming animal carcasses back to their base nutrients. Their ability to consume rotten meat without illness stems from highly acidic stomachs, with pH levels as low as 1, which destroy harmful bacteria and toxins like those that cause botulism or anthrax. Their immune systems are also uniquely robust, neutralizing pathogens that would sicken other animals, and their keen sense of smell allows them to detect ethyl mercaptan, a gas produced during early decomposition, allowing them to literally follow their nose to fresh carcasses. ` Vultures are absolutely vital to their ecosystems, preventing the spread of disease by rapidly consuming decaying remains that could otherwise harbor pathogens, thus maintaining environmental health and supporting nutrient cycling. Without vultures, carcasses would linger, increasing disease risk and disrupting the balance of ecosystems, as seen in regions where vulture populations have declined due to poisoning or habitat loss. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nature Is Metal is powered by you! Hubble Space Telescope

Round and round we go... In this new #HubbleFriday image, the spiral galaxy NGC 3596 shines from 90 million light-years away. From Hubble's perspective in low-Earth orbit, NGC 3596 appears face-on, showcasing the galaxy’s neatly wound spiral arms. These bright arms hold concentrations of stars, gas, and dust, that mark where star formation is most active, seen as the brilliant pink star-forming regions and young blue stars tracing NGC 3596’s arms. Researchers believe that spiral arms represent a pattern of high-density and low-density areas rather than a physical structure. As stars, gas, and dust orbit within a galaxy’s disk, they pass in and out of the spiral arms. Like cars moving through a traffic jam, these materials slow down and bunch up as they enter a spiral arm, before emerging and continuing their journey through the galaxy. Discover more at the link in our bio! Image description: A spiral galaxy viewed face-on, with a slightly oval-shaped disk. The galaxy’s center appears as a bright white spot surrounded by a golden glow. Two spiral arms extend out from the center, wrapping around the galaxy and broadening out to form the thick outer edge of the disk. Thin reddish strands of dust and bright pink spots follow the arms through the disk. Faint strands of stars extend from the tips of the spiral arms and out beyond the disk.
