It pays to remember that certain human carveouts around North America are still inhabited by wild lions, aka mountain lions, pumas, cougars or panthers, which roam several regions overlapping with human settlements.
These adaptable predators thrive in diverse habitats, from mountains to deserts, and are found in the western United States, including California’s Santa Monica Mountains near Los Angeles, Colorado’s Front Range close to Boulder and Denver, and states like Arizona, Utah, Oregon, and Washington.
In Canada, cougars inhabit British Columbia’s Vancouver Island and areas near Kelowna, as well as Alberta’s Rockies near Calgary. In Mexico, they roam northern regions like Sonora and Chihuahua, while in Florida, the endangered Florida panther lives in the Everglades near Miami and Naples.
Though elusive and typically avoiding heavily populated areas, cougars may venture into suburbs or rural communities seeking prey like deer, highlighting their ability to coexist near human territories across the continent.
