The Emptier Of Nests 📽 by @brandonvdz Bald eagle grabs a fledgling blue heron while mom and dad are out killing other things to eat. Just like every other predator, bald eagles are notorious for seeking the path of least resistance when looking for something to eat. Why spend all day fighting a river for fish when you can raid a nest and keep your energy expenditure to a minimum. It might not seem like the noble way to do things but the math checks out. By keeping their energy spend low, they can “save” it for unexpected challenges, like defending their own nest from a sudden threat. In the unpredictable wild, keeping energy reserves is a smart move, even if it means walking the less noble path. If you’re looking for a silver lining to this one, it looks like there were two chicks in the nest and the eagle only got one of them. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nature Is Metal is powered by you! Stars galore 🌟 From Hubble's 24th year, this image shows the globular cluster M15. This spectacular swarm of stars is one of the densest globular clusters ever discovered, with very hot blue stars and cooler orange stars becoming more concentrated toward its bright core. Globular clusters are roughly spherical groupings of stars held together by their mutual gravitational attraction. M15 was also the first globular cluster known to host a planetary nebula – the gaseous shell of a dying star. We're sharing one outstanding image from each year of Hubble’s mission to celebrate its upcoming 35th birthday – counting down to a new series of anniversary images! Stay tuned for more, and get caught up at the link in our bio!
