Compared to the rest of the Arctic, the western shore of the Hudson Bay is very far south, with an abundance of vegetation growing in the summer. Backlit by the sunset, this polar bear cub footage—as captured by Martin Gregus Jr. (@mywildlive)—projects a sense of warmth in an otherwise cold and barren area. Over two decades ago, a group of paddlers established the @northernforestcanoetrail, or NFCT, a connected group of waterways that allowed canoers and kayakers to paddle from New York's Adirondack Mountains to northern Maine. The trail is inspired by ancient routes used by Indigenous communities such as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and Algonquin people, and later became vital to the expansion of the trade and timber industries in the 1600s. Pictured here is the Browns Tract Inlet in upstate New York—one of over 80 rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds that make up the NFCT. Scientists have discovered the world's oldest ant fossil. 🐜 Living alongside the dinosaurs, the "hell ant" had a horn and tusk-like jaws, likely for taking down large insect prey. Despite being found on three continents and existing for at least 20 million years, they went extinct at some point before the end of the Cretaceous period.
