Over two decades ago, a group of paddlers established the @northernforestcanoetrail, or NFCT, a connected group of waterways that allowed canoers and kayakers to paddle from New York's Adirondack Mountains to northern Maine. The trail is inspired by ancient routes used by Indigenous communities such as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and Algonquin people, and later became vital to the expansion of the trade and timber industries in the 1600s. Pictured here is the Browns Tract Inlet in upstate New York—one of over 80 rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds that make up the NFCT.
