BEAUTIFUL DESTINATIONS

@erikaexplores reminds us why the peace of the ocean is the kind we all need 🌊✨ Captured along Cape Town’s breathtaking coastline, where golden beaches stretch for miles and rugged mountains frame every view. 🇿🇦 💙 Here are some of our favorite places to catch waves: 🏖️ Clifton Beaches: soft white sand and perfect sunset views 🌊 Camps Bay: buzzy cafés and epic Twelve Apostles backdrop 🏄 Muizenberg: colorful beach huts and laid-back surf vibes 🐬 Noordhoek: wild, wide sands and horseback rides by the sea Which one would you walk barefoot on first? 😍 📽️ @erikaexplores for @beautifuldestinations 📍 Cape Town, South Africa

Below the waves lies a world of life, wonder, and surprises—and David Attenborough is showing us how important it is to protect it. Ocean with David Attenborough premieres Saturday, June 7 at 9/8c on National Geographic. Streaming next day on @DisneyPlus and @hulu.

Who would win in a fight—a dinosaur or a giant crocodile? Around 75 million years ago in North America, the top predator was clear—Deinosuchus, the “terrible crocodile,” a 35-foot, five-ton giant that was larger than most dinosaurs and capable of eating them. How Deinosuchus became such a large and widespread predator has been a mystery—but a new study may finally explain how it became so dominant. Learn more at the link in bio. Photo by @beverlyjoubert | There is nothing quite like this kind of farewell to the day: swaying necks etched in silhouette against the glow of a Kenyan sunset. Giraffes are iconic; they seem like permanent fixtures of the African landscape, as timeless as the savanna itself. And yet, we've been losing them—quietly, steadily, and largely unnoticed. Giraffe populations have declined by nearly 40 percent in just three decades. Today fewer than 70,000 mature individuals remain in the wild. And those declines come into even sharper focus as research once again confirms not one, but four distinct giraffe species, each facing different risks. What once seemed like a single conservation challenge now emerges as a far more fragmented and fragile picture. Conservation has to evolve with the science. If we want to keep these towering icons on the landscape, we need to move fast and focus where the risk is greatest. To see more of my work, follow me @beverlyjoubert.

There are more than 2,600 firefly species across all continents, except for Antarctica, yet scientists have assessed the conservation status of only 150 of them. Of those, 20 percent are already threatened with extinction, which scientists suspect is largely driven by habitat loss, pollution, pesticide use, and climate change. This knowledge gap is a huge problem for conservation. To better protect fireflies, scientists need a better understanding of their behavior and ecology. To fill this gap, experts are working to monitor fireflies globally, build a comprehensive species list, and better assess their conservation status. These composite images remind us what we stand to lose—and how much darker our world would be without them.
